Lo Cheuk Yiu was born in Hong Kong China in 1998. She studied sculpture at Hong Kong Baptist University the Academy of Visual Arts in 2016 – 2020. Her practice is mainly based on sculpture, often installation. Lo’s practices in Iceland were so influenced by their environment and culture. The emptiness of space in Iceland gives Lo comfort to play with area, the environment, to immerse herself into the nature. Lo was able to work in the UK as an assistant of a significant figurative sculptor Mr. Mark Richards and to make stone artwork in Dingli Stone Factory in Fujian China.
Combining thought of reflections of her own experience and personal emotions, as well as the fundamental language of the material, Lo varies from realistic to conceptual, but the consistency is the theme of relationships between the human and the animals; between human and the nature; between inner thoughts and feelings. Stone, wood, steel, fiberglass, resin, paper, cement, different materials are explored in her practice.
‘The process of subtractive carving likes awaking the little creature that sleeps underneath the material, metamorphosing the hard stone into a tangible entity.’ In boundless scope of medium of art, Lo especially likes stone carving. Taken from the substance that has been deposited for umpteen eras, stone has its own story, its own history. Stones’ experiences exceed much beyond Lo’s knowledge of 21 years survival on the earth. Lo believes the innate spirit of stone are awaiting and settled down long for awaiting the friction between the artist, the society and itself. Unique aura created by seasoned stones is not able to be felt in other medium. The small crystals, the textures, the shapes, the sizes… are traces of the stones’ stories of life. ‘Stepping into the span of the stone, I respect the stone, I respect the material. Material is no longer just a material, but a character of a tale.’
Lo’s enthusiasm of the sculptural figurative form gives rise to her start of modelling and carving three years ago. Gazes and gestures of Lo’s sculptures determine the emotions expressed. Her works bestow senses of peacefulness and vulnerability. Pure and benign living beings are Lo’s favoured personas in her creations.
