chema

chema was born in granada, spain (1995). they moved around a lot as a kid due to their mother's teaching, so they ended up living all around the southeastern region of Andalusia, never quite settling this unsettled nature took them traveling to scotland, then for a little bit around europe, landing in marseille, paris and finally returning to edinburgh. after a few years of failed college stints they moved to glasgow, where they failed into higher education eventually doing a foundation at clyde college and finally landing at the glasgow school of art they graduated in 2025 with a distinction on an mlitt in fine art practice, and almost immediately after they presented their first solo show at the inauguration of horsepower, in the east end of the city. since then they have continued to make slow work from their studio at strange field and now as well at the glasgow sculpture studios having shown primarily in artist-run spaces and other independent ventures in scotland and beyond, they're next showing in palma de mallorca, at the 10th anniversary 'panorama' at Galeria Reus. a solo show at the Museo de Arte de Almeria is coming up in summer of 2027, at the Espacio 2; and many others exhibitions are planned but not yet confirmed

Artist statement

i like to refer to my current practice as a melding of geographies, as an immigrant to scotland who works with materials from my native spain and my current home of glasgow fundamentally my work is about extraction of materials from the environment (coastal or urban) to construct bodies of work out the discarded, the buried under and the scrap of human existence. for years now i’ve been travelling back home to almeria, spain, where greenhouses power the economy of the region by covering it almost entirely in white plastics and exporting produce up north. i have collected some of these plastics, thrown away at the coast and transported them back home. in glasgow i then find structures of metal or wood that support these plastics to be imprinted with delicate fine grids onto them. these grids call back both to the work of Agnes Martin as well as the geographies of the greenhouses themselves. sometimes the plastics stand as structures of their own, further making a point about humanity’s impact on our soils, landscapes and neighbours

i’m currently working on expanding this body of work, experimenting with different structures and shapes but taking a long time to do so, to draw out the patience and perseverance of a practice that calls for quiet reflection. in a world that seems to move a little too quickly my work asks for a moment of silence and slows down. it rewards focused observation and discards the hasty, impatient viewer i like to think of my work as a continuous practice, boundaried though never-ending
