Ryan Static
Ryan Static is a London-based visual artist working primarily in figurative painting. His work explores lived experiences and the emotional weight memories hold for us and how communicating his own life impacts others in how they reflect on their own.
Working instinctively from images and ideas that provoke an immediate emotional response, Static combines realistic depictions of people with blacked out compositions that create an immediate psychological impact on the viewer.
After finishing college, Static decided to follow his dream in becoming a known Artist. His parents couldn't afford for him to go to art school so he stayed in his room and painted everyday. This was around the same time he also began songwriting, learning both crafts simultaneously. Static's passion for narrative in his work would be highly influenced by his love of music and have a deep impact on his visual language.
Static Worked in a multitude of jobs alongside working as an artist to finance his life and career, until COVID hit in 2020. Out of work and trapped inside he spiralled for a few months, but this would also prove to be a productive time and where he would start crafting his signature style.
Static has exhibited in London since 2014, including shows at Espacio Gallery, Hartslane Gallery and Galleria Objets. He has also exhibited as part of London formed collective 'Nu Tab Collective' who curated a number of shows between 2016 - 2017.
I worked any kind of retail job just to pay my way, until covid hit. I lost my job and for a while spiralled. but in this spiralling I started finding my voice in painting. Since the end of last year I have now started to make an impact on the art scene my work, being interviewed and working with galleries, alongside inspiring art students from different countries who will write to me for advice on art.

Artist Statement
My paintings capture my personal history as raw and as vulnerable as possible. I use my work as a way of exploring my own memories, emotions and lived experiences. The starting point is often instinctive. When an image affects me strongly enough, I feel an urge to capture it. I am interested in moments of vulnerability, intimacy, discomfort, isolation and connection, particularly the ordinary experiences that can carry an unexpectedly powerful emotional weight. Personal experiences are an important source for my work, It’s where I find the strongest narratives to paint.
There is darkness in my work, but also beauty and hope. I am interested in that tension, the coexistence of difficult experiences with moments of tenderness and connection. Ultimately, I want the paintings to be direct. I want the viewer to encounter the emotional reality of the image while still having enough space to bring their own memories, experiences and interpretations to it.
