David Hockney / Jack Hazan
A Bigger Splash
Original French cinema handbill, 1974
An original double-sided French promotional handbill produced for the theatrical release of Jack Hazan’s A Bigger Splash, the landmark film portrait centred on British artist David Hockney.
Filmed over several years, A Bigger Splash moves between documentary observation and staged scenes, following Hockney’s artistic life, friendships and relationship with Peter Schlesinger. The film became an important visual record of Hockney and his creative circle during the early 1970s.
The front of this handbill features distinctive monochrome artwork associated with Hockney and the film, while the reverse shows Hockney being filmed by director Jack Hazan together with the original French theatrical advertising.
The reverse announces the film’s Paris release from 16 October 1974, including screenings at Studio des Ursulines and Mac-Mahon.
A scarce surviving piece of period David Hockney film ephemera and an appealing collectible at the intersection of contemporary art, cinema and 1970s visual culture.
