The exhibition brought together major paintings spanning Basquiat’s career, from works of the early 1980s through to paintings made shortly before his death in 1988. It was the first solo presentation of his work in a British public gallery after his death.
The catalogue includes the essay “King of Crowns” by Richard D. Marshall and was issued with a separate large-format interview insert, “Jean-Michel as told by Fred Braithwaite a.k.a. Fab 5 Freddy,” interviewed by Ingrid Sischy. Specialist booksellers describe the publication as 32 pages plus an 8-page insert, as issued.
