A collectible limited-edition publication by Turner Prize-winning British artist Mark Wallinger, produced in connection with his acclaimed 2009 Hayward Gallery exhibition The Russian Linesman.
Unlike the standard paperback edition, this is the hardcover limited edition of only 200 copies, individually signed and numbered by Mark Wallinger.
Taking its title from the disputed goal in the 1966 World Cup Final between England and West Germany, The Russian Linesman explores ideas that have long shaped Wallinger’s practice: boundaries, thresholds, perception, ambiguity and the unstable line between fact and fiction.
Curated by Wallinger himself, the original Hayward exhibition brought together almost 2,000 years of visual culture. The publication contains more than 100 illustrations and places historical material alongside works by artists including Vija Celmins, Thomas Demand, Albrecht Dürer, Bruce Nauman, Giuseppe Penone and Fred Sandback.
The result is more than a conventional exhibition catalogue. It offers an unusually direct insight into Wallinger’s visual references, intellectual interests and curatorial thinking.
