A significant artist book by British artist Tacita Dean, centred on the extraordinary story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and the abandoned trimaran Teignmouth Electron.
Crowhurst entered the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, the first solo non-stop round-the-world yacht race. After realising that his boat was not capable of completing the journey, he began transmitting false position reports. Months later, the Teignmouth Electron was discovered drifting and empty.
In 1998, Tacita Dean travelled to Cayman Brac, where the abandoned boat had been left, photographing its remains and researching the events surrounding Crowhurst’s disappearance.
The book combines Dean’s photographs, texts and archival material into a fragmented narrative that reflects on failure, disappearance, time, memory and myth — themes central to her wider practice.
Originally published in 1999, this 2009 paperback edition was produced by Book Works in association with Steidl.
