Artist Statement
Edward Hongyi JIA. With a predominance of green shades and an intentionally impressionistic styled brushwork, Hongyi JIA shows a sophisticated approach towards exploring the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. These subversive landscapes physically engulf the viewer with their dominating size, presenting an intricate and paradoxical conflict within our perception of the artificial and the natural.
The artist considers how humanity continues to detach itself from nature, rather than understandingits dependence on it, especially how we are constantly developing as a species. As the artist suggests:The relationship between man and nature holdssuch a history of confrontation, coexistence, conquest, fusion, and erosion. As we develop technologies to evolve and constantly adapt to the environment, there will be a point where the environment cannot carry civilization. Therefore, technology can lead to disaster, this may be one of the main contradictions. Regarding the concretization of my concepts, I create artificial landscapes which focus on the entanglement of nature and science. They reflect a perfect hypothesis vacuum of excessive artificiality and control. Using the past to express the future and the present.
